Knock, Gin and the layoff boundary

A legal threshold is not a guaranteed round win.

Mark the moment

The calculator accepts ten cards after a normal discard. It can report zero deadwood, or a value within the usual ten-point knock threshold. You must still establish that the actual turn and discard were legal.

Give layoffs their own step

After a non-Gin knock, the defender may add eligible unmatched cards to the knocker’s exposed melds. They cannot add cards to the knocker’s deadwood. The knocker does not get a reciprocal layoff. Gin does not permit the defender to lay off.

Why a low knock may lose

If the defender’s final count is no higher than a non-Gin knocker’s count, the defender undercuts. A tied final count is therefore significant. Do not record the winner before checking the allowed layoffs.

Enter an agreed result

Our round scorebook accepts counts confirmed by both players. It does not inspect either hand or calculate layoffs. The calculator is useful for one hand’s own melds, but its minimum-alone result is not automatically the defender’s final count.
